Good night is the words used to express good wishes over bedtime while Good bye is is a word used to express good wishes when parting. Oxford English Dictionary
Good night denotes that, there is the possibility that we will see the next day because the night is just a period between sun set to morning but good bye is a parting affairs know where you are going and where the other is also going and knowing that there is no possibility of meeting again, good bye now comes in.

This question came as a result of what happened to a family not quite long. There is this family of five, husband and wife with two boys and a girl. This Christian family of note worthy and of emulation. The ugly thing here is that the second boy wasn't a Christian and with his character he was dragging the family name to the mould and bringing disgrace to the entire family.
Pastors, elders, family members have talked with this young man but refused to listened but rather grew worse than before.
The effects of his actions cause the family great deal to the extent that
Several name were given to the family.
His father was removed from his position in the Church for inability to train his children.
His father was attacked with BP.
The boy was expelled from school.
The mother on her own was restless
While the brother and sister hide themselves in shame.
On one blessed day it look like the father knew he is going to pass on to glory. On this faithful even after evening devotion, he called the wife and told her "Good night", to the senior son he said "Good night" and to the only daughter he said "Good night"but to this young man who brought all these calamity to the family, he said"Good bye!"
On hearing the word "Good bye", he stood in angered and says, "Dad, you told every one good night but you told me "Good bye" why?". The father replied, "We are not compatible, every one in this family are Christians but you are not; I am going away and I know I will meet with others again some day that is why I told them "Good night" but for you we will not meet again that is why I told told you "Good bye."
This young man cried and cried that very night almost to the point of death and finally he was led to Christ which mark the beginning of new things in his life.
